Mommy on the Go: Amy Soderlind

An ode to an old soul, keeping the beauty of fashion’s past alive in her stylings; Amy Soderlind. This fearless mama embodies all that inspires us at For Love and Lemons; she crafts and curates her own unique style of much loved vintage pieces, drawing upon inspiration from her travels and wanderings. Not to mention, she has quite the way with words on her inspiring blog, Refuses to Label. We admire the intention she puts in her life; her life is her art. Whether she is spending days farming with her man, Lauren, and son, Myles, on their property nestled in the Wine Country of Northern California, or styling editorials and musicians, this leading lady leaves a trace of beauty behind in everything she does.

We had to stop and ask her just how she balances excelling in the demanding fashion industry and being a Mommy on the Go.

I was raised by hippies from the 60's... by a rock n roll manager father and a mother that is a painter. We strive to give Myles as dreamy of a childhood as ours was in Mendocino. Since having a child, I don't blink when scheduling doesn't work out with a dream job or when all my childless friends are out partying and I am at home with a book and a baby. My priorities shifted overnight when I found out I was pregnant. While I fought it during my unexpected yet welcomed pregnancy, as soon as I met him, everything I wanted, needed, and cared about shifted.

Nothing moves me like music and people with a style all their own.

Trends don't interest me.... people do.

Early risers or night owls?

Amy: Lauren has always been a night owl. I’ve always found it hard to keep my eyes open past 9, unless I’ve been drinking copious amounts of alcohol or caffeine. I’m up early for work with early set times. We’ve both been persuaded into earlier mornings and evenings through parenthood. This time, together...which I selfishly enjoy.

Do you like your man clean shaven or with a bit of scruff?

Amy: Scruff.

The more the merrier.

What is your favorite outfit she wears?

Lauren: Her old jeans and a killer rock tee that I wish fit me. She always finds these amazing vintage shirts, often men’s, but she cuts them up/sews up back without giving me the ability to put up a good fight for them!

Favorite getaway?

Amy: Yuba River. We’ve been meeting/going there and falling in love for 13 years now. Lots of our history lays with those big rocks and clear waters. Or up Highway 1 to our hometown in Mendocino. If we can’t get there, redwoods and Northern California coastlines. Nothing in the world does this soul better.

Waffles or pancakes?

Lauren : Every Sunday we have Waffles, fruit, and yogurt. Something about those little crevasses that hold on tight to whole butter and maple syrup...

Favorite music to listen to together?

Amy: Funk. Soul. Roots Reggae. Anything we can dance to.

Ideal date night?

Amy: Stained red lip. Tight black high waisted pants. Sushi. Dancing with all of our friends in the city.... (live music much preferred). Crashing in the bus or getting a hotel room. Early morning breakfast just the two of us... Driving through the country back home.

Lauren: Home in bed ;)

Funniest memory with Myles?

Amy: The first time I saw him doing push ups with Lauren on the porch. Very serious and, quite frankly, impressive form for someone who just started walking.

Favorite family moment:

Amy: Waking up the morning after giving birth. All three of us tucked together on a single mattress in our downstairs bedroom at home... Myles on Lauren’s chest... both of them breathing in the same rhythm. It was an out of body, mind altering experience. I don’t think I took a breath or blinked for at least a minute. I was in a state of complete awe and total shock like.... wait.. this just happened? No longer two? I just did that? This is OUR son? The pain and the exhaustion was obsolete (momentarily) and in it’s place, a joy that I have never felt before.

Nicknames?

Lauren: I call her Tanto.

Amy: He’s my Loneranger.

First thing you do when you wake up?

Amy: First thing? Usually laying there, wishing I wasn’t awake. 30 seconds pass and I’ve usually gotten myself out of denial though... it also helps knowing I have maybe 15 minutes to myself before all the guys are up and needing this and that ;)

First thing is first: Myles’ breakfast. He is a ravenous little beast when he wakes up. Juma, our Ridgeback, goes outside to chase squirrels from the garden... and Lauren starts his Cappuccino making. Somewhere along the way I am already on my second (very large) Yerba Mate and KQED is usually ringing through the kitchen.

Go-to outfit when hanging with Myles?

My look hasn’t changed much since having a child. My work uniform and “mom” uniform have married easily. Vintage 501 Levis/Wranglers (anything higher waisted) and an old rock t-shirt or tucked in blouse or cropped knit. Add a belt, kicker boots, and a cap or head scarf and I'm set.

Coffee or Tea?

Before pregnancy I drank 3 cups of coffee a day. That was the hardest thing to let go of when I found out I had a little Myles growing. 9 months off of it, then more time for breastfeeding.... my body no longer wanted it when I could finally have it. As soon as I started working again, the "no caffeine" thing simply wasn’t working, so I started drinking Mate instead… just as much energy but seemingly cleaner and less acidic. Something my body has much enjoyed.

Trick to balancing Mommy time with everything else you have going on?

Amy: My family of friends and Myles’ Grandmas and Grandpas that help us both so much. My work allows me to go hard for 2 weeks (in which I rarely see Myles or Lauren) and then I insist on taking a few weeks off to be at home everyday with them. Everyone comes together when I have gigs out of town for long periods of time and really chips in. It takes a village... it surely does. If you want a career.... you have to be ok with asking for help from those around you.

What keeps you energized?

Amy: Mate. Lots of it. Good healthy food... a semi regular “exercise” plan.

An extraordinary man by my side that keeps me challenged and always dreaming bigger.

Favorite Tunes for Myles?

He will run from any room and give me the serious head rockin’ bang if any of these are played:

JJ Cale
The Rolling Stones
Dire Straights
Marvin Gaye

Describe Myles in 3 words:

Fearless
Willful.
Rock ‘n Roller.

Favorite thing to dress him in?

Nothing. Naked is best in this home.
